Maputo, Maputo City

Maputo City is the political, cultural and commercial capital of Mozambique, located in the far south of the country along the beautiful Maputo Bay. Known as the “City of Acacias” and the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, Maputo blends historic charm, vibrant urban life and a strategic coastal position that supports business, tourism and trade.

Location & Layout
Maputo covers approximately 347 km² and is divided into seven municipal districts and more than 60 neighbourhoods. To the east lies the Indian Ocean; to the west, the Infulene Valley forms a natural boundary with the city of Matola. Maputo also borders Marracuene to the north and Matutuíne to the south.
Its coastline, port and bay area play a central role in its economic and logistical importance.

Population
Maputo is home to an estimated 1.1–1.3 million residents, making it one of the most densely populated urban areas in the region.
The greater Maputo Metropolitan Area — which includes Matola, Boane and Marracuene — is home to around 3 million people and continues to grow rapidly due to urbanization and economic migration.
