Maputo City is the political, cultural and commercial capital of Mozambique, located in the far south of the country along the beautiful Maputo Bay. Known as the “City of Acacias” and the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, Maputo blends historic charm, vibrant urban life and a strategic coastal position that supports business, tourism and trade.
Location & Layout
Maputo covers approximately 347 km² and is divided into seven municipal districts and more than 60 neighbourhoods. To the east lies the Indian Ocean; to the west, the Infulene Valley forms a natural boundary with the city of Matola. Maputo also borders Marracuene to the north and Matutuíne to the south.
Its coastline, port and bay area play a central role in its economic and logistical importance.Population
Maputo is home to an estimated 1.1–1.3 million residents, making it one of the most densely populated urban areas in the region.
The greater Maputo Metropolitan Area — which includes Matola, Boane and Marracuene — is home to around 3 million people and continues to grow rapidly due to urbanization and economic migration.Economy & Business Environment
As the economic hub of Mozambique, Maputo hosts major corporate headquarters, government institutions and key service industries.
The strongest sectors include:- Trade and commerce
- Transport and logistics
- Communications and financial services
- Light manufacturing and industry
Maputo Port is one of the city’s most important assets, serving as a regional trade gateway for imports and exports.
While the business sector grows steadily, some areas still face infrastructure challenges and socio-economic inequalities, especially in informal settlements.Infrastructure & Mobility
Maputo offers a mix of modern and developing infrastructure.
Public transport remains limited, which increases the reliance on private vehicles and the widespread use of informal minibuses (“chapas”).
Urban mobility plans are underway to improve road systems, expand public transport and promote walking and cycling as safe, accessible alternatives.Education & Culture
Maputo is home to the country’s oldest and largest university, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, as well as other public and private higher-education institutions.
Culturally, the city is known for:- Its lively arts and music scene
- Rich culinary diversity
- Colonial and modernist architecture (Art Deco, Bauhaus & Neoclassical)
- Museums, theatres, markets and a dynamic nightlife
Challenges & Opportunities
As a fast-growing African capital, Maputo faces significant urban challenges — including traffic congestion, housing pressure, sanitation needs and rising socio-economic inequality.
At the same time, it offers considerable opportunities for investment and development in:- Real estate
- Tourism
- Logistics and transport
- Retail and services
- Hospitality
- Coastal and waterfront projects
